KARNATAKA
A
total of 980 salt samples were collected at beneficiary level from 25 districts
included in the study. It was found that only15.8% of the population was consuming
salt with the stipulated level of iodine i.e. 15ppm and more (Table I)
The
district-wise distribution of iodine content of salt is depicted in Table II.
It was observed that 54.4% of the
families were consuming iodised salt
with 5 ppm and more iodine. The districts of Gulbarga, Tumkur, Bellary,
Davangeree, Hassan, Kappal, Kolar, Haveri and Bijapur had more than 90% of the
families consuming salt with iodine content of less than 15ppm (Table VI).
A
total of 403 salt samples were collected from
traders level. It was observed that only 36.0% of the samples of village
level and 44.6% of the district level traders had iodine content of 15ppm and
more (Table VII).
The
details of each district in which survey was conducted has been depicted in Table VIII. It was found that on
an average salt samples were collected from 18 villages (range: 5-30) from each
district. The district level sensitization meeting on health consequences of
iodine and benefits of iodised salt was conducted in 14 out of 25 districts.
Table
IX depicts the district-wise distribution of
UIE levels. It was found that districts Gulbarga, Bellary, Davangeree,
Kolar, Bijapur, Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu and Shimoga had median UIE less than
100.0 μg/l. Also in majority of the districts (6/8) more than 20% of the
samples had UIE levels less than 50.0
μg/l indicating deficient iodine nutriture in the population included in
the survey. In these districts, more than 60% of the families were consuming
iodised salt with less than 5 ppm of iodine, except Bellary (44.7%), Kolar
(50.0%) and Bijapur (37.4)% .
