The National Iodine Deficiency  Disorders Control Programme (NIDDCP) launched by Government of India envisages prevention and control of IDD in the country through supply and consumption of iodised salt in place of common salt for edible purposes. Salt Department has been identified as the Nodal Agency for implementing the programme in so far as creation of iodisation capacity, quality monitoring at production sources equitable distribution in the country is concerned.

The Policy initiatives taken by the government over the last one decade have helped in moving closer towards the goal of Universal Salt Iodisation (USI). The production of iodised slat, which was 45.35 lakh tonnes during 2000-2001, has increased to 47.92 lakh MT during the year 2001-02.

To achieve the goal of Universal Iodisation of all edible salt in the country, concerted efforts are made at all levels. The Department has permitted 878 parties to undertake commercial production of iodised salt/refined iodised salt generating a capacity of about 112.1 lakh tonnes per annum as on 31st March, 2002 which is more than sufficient to cater to the edible salt requirement of the country.

The production of iodised salt during the calendar year 2001 was 44.76 lakh tonnes as compared year 2001 was 44.76 lakh tonnes as compared to 46.89 during 2000 as against the target of 50.0 lakh tonnes. The decreases in production during the calendar year was mainly due to:-

-                      devastating earthquake in Gujarat in January, 2001 in which many refineries and iodisation plants were affected

-                      lifting of ban orders by Govt. of Gujarat.

-                      Lifting of ban orders by Govt. of Orissa during 31.3.01-17.10.01.

The state wise break-up of production of iodised salt and salt iodisation plants installed is furnished in Annexures- 7.1 & 7.3

Consequent to the withdrawal of National Wide Ban order on the sale of non-iodised salt for direct human consumption, w.e.f. 13.9.2000, Government of Gujarat has withdrawn the State wide ban orders w.e.f 17.01.01 and Govt. of Orissa lifted the ban w.e.f. 31.3.01 & reimposed w.e.f. 18.10.01.

As on date except Kerala & Gujarat all other States have either fully/partially (Andhra Pradesh 7 District & Maharashtra 17 Districts) banned sale of non Iodised Salt for direct human consumption, in their territories.

  • There was no change in the polcy of the Government in permitting iodisation plants at the manufacturing and consuming centres. However, permissions for establishing iodisation plants at consuming centres. However, permissions for establishing iodisation plants at consuming centres were granted on the specific recommendations of the concerned State Governments.

  • There are at present 19 registered Potassium Iodate manufacturing units. The chemical used in the salt iodistion process in the country, Potassium Iodate is produced indigenously by importing iodine.

  • The Baragara/Phoda salt manufacturers were reluctant to produce phoda salt by taking a minimum of two crops & to crush it before iodisation. They had been pleading for its dispatch without crushing. The Government has further extended time limit for the dispatch if iodised phoda salt without crushing up to 31.10.2001.
